Question: Do all coffee maker make coffee the same way?
(Posted by: help on 2010-03-08 10:30:41)
Does a $10 coffee maker make coffee different than a $50 or higher one. I'm assuming they all send water through the filter and drip the same way. I'm guessing the only difference would be the features, would this be true. |

In theory, yes. In reality, no. It also depends on how particular you are. For most coffee makers, there are two places where temperature can affect the quality of your coffee. First the water heater. Coffee should be brewed with the water temperature between 195-205 degrees fahrenheit. The other place is the warming plate. Coffee that is kept at drinking temperature too long changes the flavor of the coffee. A thermal pot without a warming plate is ideal. Usually, but not always, the more expensive makers have more features such as a clock to turn your pot on automatically and a stop-valve so you can pour the first cup while the coffee is still brewing. All coffeemakers should have an automatic shut-off for the warming plate after about two hours to prevent fires. If you're purchasing whole beans, grind them just before brewing and use a gold filter instead of a paper filter for the best coffee flavor. Hope that helps. |

They work the same way, but super-cheap coffee makers have the following problems: 1. They don't get the water hot enough 2. They are made of cheaper materials that don't hold up well over time 3. Less auto-features Spend at least $40 and get a decent one that you won't have to replace every year. |
