Question: How do you make a mocha, latte and a cappuchino without using an espresso machine?
(Posted by: Sissy on 2010-01-05 19:20:35)
I refuse to purchase an espresso machine for like 300 dollars simply b/ c i can't afford it. And I don't want to go to Mcdonalds or Starbucks and waste 4 dollars. So, will everyone please tell me how to make them and please be detailed. I need to how much of the ingredients is needed. And do not direct me to a website. I tried that, it didn't work. If anyone knows how, please, by all means, take the time to write it down. I just simply can't live without a cappuchino/ latte/ mocha. It would save me a lot of $5's. Thank you. |

You can make with a regular coffee pot, but the secret is in the bean. you can either make EXTREMELY EXTREMELY strong coffee or go to the store and buy a specialty bean, and grind them them (some grocery stores have a grinder, best to phone and check out which one's offer this) then you could get flavored beans like hazelnut, etc. grind to a regular grind. why? because with espresso/ cappuccino makers, the fine ground bean is "pressed " into it's metal filtering cup, and the water literally shoots out of the machine at about 175*F and at a high intensity. thus that is why the bean needs to be ground fine, it needs to have it's flavor "pulled " out of it right away. with a coffee pot, you put the ground beans (medium ground, remember, like regular coffee) into a filter, the water takes it's time to drip, and eventually sticks around for a bit in the filter itself. so you don't need to have a fine grind. TO MAKE THE WHIPPED CREAM: Get WHOLE milk, and a whisk, put into a large pot with a handle so you can whisk and tilt the pot at the same time under high flame. you really need to whisk it a lot, as it will be cooking, and you need to get that puff. i've also had some success mixing HEAVY whipping cream and whole milk in equal amounts and then whisking over high flame. line the cups with lemon juice and dip in cinnamon sugar, pour in coffee, and top with poofed cream. you can also use redi whip or cool whip for a change of pace. top with a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar or cocao. |

Well, hate to be the bearer of bad news but you're never going to get a true latte, etc. without an espresso machine. The reason is the espresso machine not only gives you a condensed coffee flavor (that you could get around without a machine) but it actually blows hot steam into the milk which gives it a frothy, thick, sweet, wonderfully delicious flavor. Having said that, the closest thing you could do at home is boil the milk with a thick rolling boil. That will leave the milk thick and slightly bubbly, maybe. And then just brew your coffee extra strong. You could even buy a special Espresso blend of coffee from a coffee shop. I gotta say, it's not gonna be the same, but it's worth a try. |

You don't have to buy a machine, although it will make it more authentic. Buy a Bialetti Brikka amazon.com/ Bialetti-Brikka-4-Cup-Stovetop-Percolator/ dp/ B0001DJT7G/ ref= sr_1_1?ie= UTF8 &s= home-garden &qid= 1262749056 &sr= 8-1 It makes real espresso (even with the crema) with regular grind coffee. A real espresso machine needs an expensive quality grinder to make a fine & consistent grind. Espresso is just coffee made with water under pressure. The water should be around 200-205F for proper extraction. With a Brikka, you also don't need to worry about compressing the coffee (you actually are told not to do so by Bialetti). To make make milk foam, all you need is a steel pot (I use a saucier) and a whisk. You should use reduced fat milk as full milk won't froth up properly and skim milk will make dry and tasteless foam. Just put cold milk into the pot and whisk constantly while on medium-high heat. It will foam up perfectly for a latte, but it won't froth up well enough to make a perfect as cappuccino since it won't volume up like steam would. I use this frothing method for larger groups. My moka pot is my main way to make coffee, although I have seven ways. |

Poor man's latte grab a pan and heat some milk. Wisk the crap out of it to get the proper air into the milk. The milk shoud look smooth and textured. No big bubbles. Add to a good quality dark roast coffee. Preferably a whole bean that you ground just before brewing. Brew stronger then usual, but to your preference. Pour coffee a third into cup and add milk. Add syrups and chocolate (good quality) depending on drink. You can also make chai this way w/ the milk. Seep your tea bag double strength add brown sugar/ cinnamon to the cup depending on taste and then milk. It's good. |
