How do you decalcify an espresso machine?

Question: How do you decalcify an espresso machine?

(Posted by: Mom G on 2010-01-28 17:13:45)

I have a simple Krups pump espresso machine. I know it needs a decalcifier, and I have found a few cleaning solutions on amazon.com, but what do I do once I get it? I plan to purchase this one: Durgol 0296 Express Multipurpose Decalcifier Does that one work well? If not, let me know what does. Thanks!

There are plenty of products out there, the Durgol will work fine. I use a few that come in tablet instead of liquid. All you need to do is put the liquid into the water reservoir (dilute according to instructions), let the machine warm up, run it like your pulling a shot with a bowl to collect the liquid. Run it for about half the reservoirs supply, then switch to the steamer nozzle in water, not steam, mode. When the machine runs out of liquid, refill it with water & run again. Fill the reservoir a third time and rinse a final time to make sure you got everything clear & your done. I'm not familiar with the Krups specifically (I use a Rancilio Silvia). If the water reservoir is removable, take it out & rinse it after the Durgol is used to make the rinse clearer. If you do that, you probably won't need to do the third rinse. Proper maintenance will make your espresso machine more consistent & help it last longer, so cleaning is a good idea. Durgol & similar products will clean without leaving terrible flavors behind.
